Two of m
y works are currently on display in FMI’s group exhibition, “All Options Open”. This is a continuation of FMI’s long-standing relationship with the museum SMAHK/DeFKa in Assen. The exhibition opened on the 19th of January with a lovely introduction by Toos Arends, director of CBK Drenthe.
Included in the show are two pieces of mine: a video work entitled “Blindengeleidentegels (Blind guiding tiles)” documenting a city walk in which I systematically followed the infrastructure of tiles in Groningen train station that use texture to assist blind people in navigating the space. The video is projected on the floor of the theatre hall. The second work is a photo installation called “Barricade”, which includes a photographic print viewable through the end of a traffic cone mounted on the wall.
Besides my own work, the show includes pieces of all mediums by my fellow artists: Lu Zhang, Joyce Zwerver, Veronique Schrama, Susanna Inglada, Lotte Bosman, Pim Tieland, Dinda Fass, Erik Nooij, Ikue Konishi, Michiel Burger, Fumie Takahashi, Janine van Veen, Kleopatra Nikoloau, Marcel de Vries, Aggeliki Tsekeni, and Adriana Leonor García Gaitán.
If you have a chance, come out and see the show! The work is great and will surely give you something to think about.
For those of you living in Groningen, the Netherlands, keep your eyes peeled for my newest intervention – the Coordinates project. A series of signs have been planted around the city, specifically tailored to their geographic location. More will be popping up in the next few weeks.
Photographer’s Forum magazine will be including one of my photographs in its upcoming hardcover book: Best of Photography 2011. The photograph, Metro (1), has been selected as part of the finalist group, among the top 11% of the contestants. Entries were judged by Darcy Huebler, Dean of Photography, California Institute of the Arts; Daniel Overturf, faculty, Southern Illinois University; and Dr. Ian R. Smith, head of the honours program in photography at Salisbury Collge, UK. Winners and honourable mentions will be chosen by the end of August, and the book will be published in December, 2011.
June 4, 2011: de Nacht van Kunst & Wetenschap
On June 4, 2011, Groningen is the place to be! The city will be hosting the “Nacht van Kunst & Wetenschap”, the Night of Art and Science. The whole city centre will be filled with the work of artists and scientists alike. ‘The Night’ is a festival with music, theatre, exhibitions, debates and scientific experiments. Discover The Night! My work will be shown in USVA, a multi-disciplinary cultural student centre.
I am a Canadian artist who spent her formative years in a suburban neighbourhood of Ottawa. As an adult, I’ve lived quite a few years in Toronto, where I began to develop a process of exploring the city in search of interesting spaces “off the beaten path”.
Following in the tradition of Guy Debord’s psychogeographer and Baudelaire’s flaneur, my current research looks at the subtle impact that the physical and social geography of the city has on the motions and emotions of the person. I have been reflecting upon my own habitual routes and the geographical areas I have considered “home” in my life. I have been looking into the concept of mapping as it relates to the individual experience of place and at the process of pedestrian travel. In challenging myself to take more creative routes through the city, I seek to achieve a heightened awareness of the urban landscape. While I traverse and re-traverse the city, I document what I notice through video, painting, drawing, and photography.
I will be presenting video work that addresses this notion of the “city” and walking, attempting to share with viewers a different perspective. I also invite visitors to follow my “False Monuments” map, providing an imaginative and alternative tour route through the heart of the city.
